Opsamling - 17. september 2005 |

It's time again for a new edition of our motherboard price guide. Just like in our last edition, mail in rebates (MIRs) are plentiful this week but the prices are only reflected in the price engine itself. We'll be sure to mention any great rebate deals explicitly. Be sure to check out the RTPE at labs.anandtech.com for up to the minute pricing. Also, you can visit our Motherboard Forums for the latest discussions on all the latest motherboards.

Dell aren't a name you might traditionally associate with hardcore gamers, but they've been making a play for the enthusiast market recently. Their XPS Gen 2 laptop is generally recognised as being the best 17" gaming notebook on the market - and that's something, considering the competition from Alienware and VoodooPC and the like.
We reported a while back that Dell has been the first to snap up dual x16 nForce 4 SLI boards. The XPS 600 is the first system that integrates this board, and it does so with dual 7800GTX cards. Not only that, but the 7800s sport a dual-slot cooling solution that allows for them to be overclocked further and indeed, Dell ships them clocked up out of the box.

Logitech continues its product line with another cordless optical mouse, but this time it’s the "Mini" edition. Obviously, the mini in this case is meant for notebook users who prefer compact mice while traveling. As majority of you know, the problem with specially designed notebook mice is overall ergonomics and the device’s size. This particular mouse has a battery meter, auto shut off feature, zoom and a tilt wheel with side-to-side scrolling.

In the past few months since the launch of NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GTX cards in mid June, there has been an almost unprecedented amount of activity in the graphics industry. You would assume that with the launch of the new generation of cards from NVIDIA, things would settle down. NVIDIA would be busy marketing its new toys and reaping the rewards of its earlier launch; ATI should be slogging to solve its yield problems and get its own next generation R520 chip out as soon as possible. On the contrary, we have had an increase in competition spearheaded by a spate of new product releases from both companies.

Which motherboard to buy? Determining the answer to this question is, arguably, the most important of all hardware choices. The choice of motherboard defines, in part, just how future-proof a system will be. Making a bad choice initially leads to problems that aren't apparent for, say, CPUs and processors. Having to replace a motherboard usually necessitates a long-winded process of reinstalling an OS, programs, and personal data. In short, your motherboard has to be good or your system won't be.

On average, 70% of re-sold hard-drives and memory cards contain pornographic material according to research carried out on 1,000 hard-drives over the course of a year by Disklabs Data Recovery and Computer Forensics.
In addition, the company recently purchased a selection of storage media comprising of 100 hard-disk drives and 50 memory cards and proceeded to process a sample batch to test what data was still retrievable from them. The results were worrying as documents such as CVs and accounting spreadsheets (including names and mobile numbers) were easily accessible.

The ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 can already be had for just under $75 mail order, making it a real bargain compared to similarly-equipped products from AMD's current processor series. The main reason is that in addition to all of the usual ingredients, the board offers the possibility of implementing either an AGP or a PCI Express graphics card, both of which work without any performance losses. The foundation of the board is ULi's M1695 chipset, which drew our positive attention in an initial test.

Over the past year or so we’ve looked at a fair number of media PCs at TR, enough to show that the there is some belief in the concept; if not quite the huge take-up that some in the industry had hoped for. Most of these systems have been based on Microsoft’s Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, but it's dissapointing that Dell, the world’s largest PC company, still doesn’t offer any MCE 2005 systems at all.

In these days of all digital technology, the hankering after analogue gear calls like a Siren's song. Cooler Master's earlier Musketeer devices are built almost entirely on retro geek lust where the looks were more important than the limited functionality they offered.
The Musketeer 3 attempts not only to look pretty in that vague, it's got lights, look at my needle dance, kind of way, but to offer something approaching some genuine functionality. Is the Musketeer 3 the Monica Bellucci to the Musketeer's 2's Abi Titmuss?

Sony continues to roll out their external optical drives. Not so long ago we managed to get hold of DRX-800UL DVD burner and today we would like to offer you some detailed performance measurements for this baby. If you check our Storage section you may also want to compare the today’s results with the performance and burning quality offered by other solutions from Sony, which we have reviewed earlier.

The remarkable thing about the year 2005 is that this is when dual-core processors appeared. Both major CPU developers, AMD and Intel, introduced their dual-core architectures, which immediately found their way into the server solutions as well as into the desktop systems. New architectures aroused great response from the users, because further progress in the CPU field is most likely to go towards multiple-core architectures.

Today we have a quick review on something I stumbled onto recently. We'll be reviewing some products from a company called Casebuy. You guessed it already, they sent in a case to review. But along with it they shipped this tiny little device that, according to Casebuy, I just had to look at.

It has been a while since we last featured an nForce4 SLI Intel Edition motherboard, so we though we'd have another look at the market progression of NVIDIA's high-end Intel platform. The nForce4 SLI Intel Edition has been around for about half a year now and manufacturer support has been mounting since its inception. However, unlike the wide range of the nForce4 chipset for the AMD platform, NVIDIA has only engineered their high-end SLI part for the consumption of Intel users. When the chipset was launched, we initially saw a deluge of top-end gaming and enthusiast motherboards from ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte and announcements from many other manufacturers, but how about us ordinary Joes? Without entry-level or mainstream versions of the nForce4 for Intel, premium motherboards are usually out of the range of mainstream consumers.

NVIDIA has dominated the AMD Athlon chipset market over the last few years starting with the release of their nForce2 chipset back in 2002. The first nForce chipset was a successful entry into the motherboard market, but with the release of the nForce2, NVIDIA really came into its own. When AMD moved to the Athlon 64, FX and Opteron series of CPUs NVIDIA introduced the nForce3 line. Last year, NVIDIA released three new chips for the AMD platform, the nForce4, nForce4 Ultra and nForce4 SLI.

As modern day gamers know, the gaming world is now driven by flashy 3D graphics and complex, movie-style scripts. Despite this, older gamers - and many younger players too -believe that retro games are the way to experience gameplay at its very best.
